Grow-light setup guide

Choose a light for healthy seedlings

Seedlings need close, consistent overhead light soon after emergence. Even coverage prevents plants at the edges from stretching toward a brighter center.

At a glance

Best forVegetable, herb, and flower seedlings in trays or on a growing rack.
What to chooseA shop light or grow-light bar can work when it spans the tray and provides adequate output. Select mounting hardware that makes height changes easy.
Starting setupRun the light on a timer for roughly 14–16 hours, keep leaves clear of the fixture, and adjust height as seedlings grow.
Main limitationHeat, overwatering, and poor airflow can resemble lighting problems, so do not diagnose weak seedlings from distance alone.

Check the complete lit area

Measure or estimate light at leaf height and at more than one point. A useful center intensity does not guarantee that plants at the edges receive enough light. Fixture shape, beam angle, mounting height, barriers, and the length of the daily schedule all affect the result.

Use the result as a starting point

A listed wattage is electricity use, not plant-level brightness. Reflectors, lenses, fixture dimensions, spectrum, barriers, and the illuminated area all affect the result. Manufacturer PPFD maps or a reading from a cosine-corrected quantum meter are stronger evidence than wattage alone.
