Start with the shape and size of the plant area—not a wattage claim. A bulb works well for one compact group, bars suit shelves and trays, and panels make more sense for a square growing area.

The plant-level intensity at the leaves right now. A reading is useful only when its distance and position are known.

A simple way to set up any grow light

  1. Match the light to the area. Confirm that the bulb, bar, or panel can cover every plant you expect it to support.
  2. Start with real output. Prefer a PPFD map or reading at a stated distance. Use PPF, PPE, beam angle, fixture size, or broad-white lumens only when stronger evidence is missing.
  3. Choose a cautious position. Measure at leaf height and check the edges as well as the center.
  4. Use a timer. Most indoor setups need a consistent light period and a normal dark period; plant-specific guides provide a starting schedule.
  5. Let new growth confirm the setup. Adjust gradually when leaves bleach, stretch, lean, or grow smaller, while remembering that roots, watering, heat, and nutrition can cause similar symptoms.

Common questions

Can a regular LED bulb grow plants?

Sometimes. A bright directional broad-white bulb can support a small group of low- or medium-light plants when it is close and aimed correctly.

How far should the light be?

There is no reliable universal distance based on watts. Output, beam shape, fixture dimensions, coverage, and the plant target all matter.

How long should it stay on?

Many houseplant setups begin around 10–14 hours, while seedlings often use 14–16. Use the plant guide and DLI rather than running a light continuously.

Do “full spectrum” and equivalent watts prove quality?

No. Those labels do not establish the amount or distribution of light reaching the leaves. Look for measured output and exact setup details.

Use the result as a starting point

A listed wattage is electricity use, not plant-level brightness. Reflectors, lenses, fixture dimensions, spectrum, barriers, and the illuminated area all affect the result. Manufacturer PPFD maps or a reading from a cosine-corrected quantum meter are stronger evidence than wattage alone.
