PPFD and DLI: brightness now versus light all day

PPFD describes the photon rate reaching a square meter at one moment. DLI describes the total photosynthetically active light accumulated over an entire day.

Under a steady electric light, DLI is PPFD multiplied by operating hours and 0.0036. For example, 100 µmol/m²/s for 12 hours is about 4.3 mol/m²/day.

Why both measures matter

A strong light used briefly and a gentler light used longer can produce a similar DLI, but plants do not respond identically to every combination. Excessively high instantaneous intensity can stress a shade-adapted leaf, while a very long photoperiod can interfere with the plant’s normal dark period.

Measure where the plant is

Take readings at the top of the canopy, not at the lamp. Check several points when coverage matters because a center reading can be much higher than the edge. Keep the same distance and dimmer setting when comparing readings.

Use the result as a starting point

A listed wattage is electricity use, not plant-level brightness. Reflectors, lenses, fixture dimensions, spectrum, barriers, and the illuminated area all affect the result. Manufacturer PPFD maps or a reading from a cosine-corrected quantum meter are stronger evidence than wattage alone.
